Adult Swim's Top New Show of 2025 Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
