Blast Costs Three Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Action in Northern Italy
A trio of officers perished and at least 15 people got wounded in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the property close to the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.
Legal Proceedings
Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and a third person who fled following the explosion was located shortly later. The trio have been taken to the hospital.
The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene showed the property left as a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
Property Situation
The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member caused the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast directly hit our members,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
He believed the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
